Whitefish is a scenic mountain town resort tucked tight against Big Mountain and the stunning peaks of Glacier National Park. A year round playground, the historic railroad town offers a getaway from the hustle & bustle of the big city with its rocky mountain wilderness and warm friendly charm. Locals can trace their roots back three to four generation's, enjoy easy going, friendly, unpretentious lifestyle. Traditional businesses like a family shoe store, hardware store, barbershop, and sport shops share the downtown with boutiques, galleries and a few western bars. Cafes mingle with gourmet restaurants, coffee houses and some fast food. Don't forget to visit Whitefish's brewery. A year round outdoor playground is what defines Whitefish. The Whitefish Mountain Resort is a world class skiing and snowboarding area and in the summer it welcomes bikers and hikers and offers gondola rides and outdoor concerts. The Glacier Nordic Center has groomed trails for skating and cross country skiing. They have rolling hills along the lakes and forest and part is lighted for night time skiing. On Whitefish Lake you can boat, fish and ski or hang out at the City Beach and picnic or rent water crafts and for those of you who golf, you can play the 36 hole Whitefish Lake Golf Course. Glacier National Park is only 24 miles from Whitefish. It is the perfect location for kids to begin enjoying and valuing nature and outdoors. You can take all day hiking trips or overnight camping. You can rent a boat, take a tour, or fish. The Going to the Sun Road is the landmark crossing between the west entrance near Flathead Valley and the east entrance at St. Mary via Logan Pass. The 50 mile road was placed on the National Register of Historic places and is a National Landmark. It is steep, narrow and winding with area for viewing the beautiful scenery. Flathead Lake south of Whitefish, is one of the largest natural freshwater in the United States. It is 28 miles long and 15 miles wide, of sparkling waters and unlimited recreational opportunities from fishing to boating, camping, swimming and sailing. The lake's largest island, Wild Horse, is a wildlife refuge for over 75 species of bird along with bear, coyotes, deer and big horn sheep. There are many activities for children to have fun through out the year. Winter fun includes skiing/snowboarding, snowmobiling, ice skating and cross country skiing. During the summer there is swimming at local pools, hiking, horseback riding, kayaking/boat rentals, roller skating, bike riding, skateboarding, and fishing. There are lots of Kid's Activities the Whitefish area to keep your little ones busy. When you visit Whitefish there is always something going on whether it be summer or winter. The Winter Carnival, the Arts Festival and Big Mountain Summer Festival, Huckleberry Days and Brewfest, the Taste of Whitefish and the Christmas Stroll and Eve Torchlight Parade, when the town becomes a winter wonderland. The Stumptown Historical Society, helps visitors learn about rich timber and railroad history that makes up Whitefish. There are photographs, artifacts and personal memorabilia that make this a wonderful place to visit. The Depot Building is listed by National Register of Historic Buildings and was built by the Great Northern Railway in 1927. Frank Lloyd Wright even designed the building located on the corner of 4th and Central. The Whitefish Theatre Company provides year round community theatre, dance and music. While the new Alpine Theatre Project is the only professional Equity in Montana that produces musical theatre and drama showcasing professionals and productions from Broadway. The Glacier Symphony and Chorale performs classic series, holiday and pops concerts from October through July with world-class and emerging guest artists. They perform all over the Flathead Valley. The Chorale has over 75 adult symphonic members that perform with the Symphony for holiday and special concerts. North Valley Hospital is the largest employer in Whitefish with over 242 employees. They opened their new facility in March 2007 and has been a Plantree affiliate since 2002. Their philosophy of patient centered care is apparent by the healing art, architectural design, lighting, colors and increased patient satisfaction and comfort. Kalispell is a wonderful place to raise a family and get an education. The Whitefish School District has earned a reputation as a positive efficient and effective provider of education to the youth of the community. Not only do they offer the traditional K-12 academic subjects, they offer gifted education and a wide array of co-curricular activities. Higher education can be obtained at Flathead Valley Community College, located 15 miles from Whitefish, which offers Associate and Certificate Programs, Adult Basic Education/GED Preparation and on-line courses.
