Important Updates on the Montana Property Tax Rebate Letter & Application

Attention all JCCS clients! The professionals at JCCS want to properly update and inform you on the Montana Property Tax Rebate items, including the rebate letter and application instructions.

Starting August 1, 2023, you could receive (or have already received) a letter in the mail from the Montana Department of Revenue. This standardized, non-personal letter will discuss the Montana Property Tax Rebate, the rebate qualifications and how to properly claim the rebate for your primary Montana residence. Since these letters have been released, several questions and concerns have been brought to the attention of JCCS and the Montana Department of Revenue.

Here are some recent clarifications made by the Montana Department of Revenue regarding the Montana Property Tax Rebate letter:

  1. The letter ID # provided on each letter was originally listed as a requirement to apply for the 2022 Montana Property Tax Rebate. However, the Department of Revenue has decided the letter ID # will no longer be an application requirement. Although this is no longer a current requirement by the state, JCCS encourages everyone to save their letter as a precautionary measure.
  2. The letter has a general checklist of items required to apply for the rebate, including the required Social Security numbers. The department has clarified that only adult-dependent Social Security numbers will be required, and not child-dependent Social Security numbers.

Starting August 15, 2023, the application to claim the Montana Property Tax Rebate will be available. Taxpayers will have the option of applying for the rebate online or by paper. Per the Montana Department of Revenue, it is highly recommended to apply for this rebate online as it will be processed faster than paper applications.

October 1, 2023, will be the last day to apply for the Property Tax Rebate. The state will not accept any applications submitted after this date.
